[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Los Angeles, CA, May 2, 2016 – Monster-Maker Todd Masters, Founder & President of FX Studio MASTERSFX, has won his second career Emmy Award.
On Friday, April 29, Masters and his team won a 2016 Daytime Emmy Award in the category “Outstanding Makeup” for the Netflix TV movie “R.L. Stine’s Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls.” Masters won the Emmy along with Debbie Lelievre, Key Makeup Artist.
Also sharing the Emmy Award team win are several make-up trailers full of fellow monster-making artists: Mike Fields, Holland Miller, Felix Fox, Harlow MacFarlane, Jason Ward, Sarah Pickersgill, Chris DeVitt, Yukiyo Okajima, Brad Proctor, Thomas Sosnowski, Julia Bors Dollinger, Jennifer Kipps, Courtney Frey, Darlene Brister, Lisa Strong, Amy Van Wormer, Natalie Cosco, Beth Boxall, Vanessa Giles, Judy Andreson, Ceiligh Dunn, April Boyes, Sophia Phillips, Shannon Coppin and Pearl Louie.
Masters, who won his first Emmy Award for his contributions to HBO’s hit series “Six Feet Under,” said, “The challenge on the ‘Monsterville’ project was bringing the immense amount of monster characters to life – on schedule and on-budget, all while retaining a feature film-quality look. We were fortunate to be working again with director Peter DeLuise, who allowed us total creative freedom on the design and approach – which really made it a memorable show. We filled it with prosthetic monsters: witches, goblins, zombies and ghouls – as well as my sister-in-law’s favorite – the Demon Clown! (not!)”
Director Peter DeLuise adds, “I’ve done several shows with Todd and his MASTERSFX team over the years – and it’s always exciting to see whatever magic they deliver. This time, we gave them complete carte blanche to create a gaggle of monsters of nearly every type: Awful. Awesome. Amazing! They truly deserve the EMMY – outstanding work on our show!”
“Monsterville” Executive Producer & Writer Dan Angel continues, “Todd Masters and Debbie Lelievre’s teams provided some of the most amazing creature Makeup FX I have ever seen. These teams were top-notch and the makeup and creature work elevated our show. Congratulations on the well deserved Emmy.”

Acclaimed creature FX studio MastersFX has just earned a 2019 Daytime Emmy Award nomination for “Outstanding Makeup” for its work on the Netflix movie “Aliens Ate My Homework. Todd Masters, Founder and President of MASTERSFX, also served as a Co-Producer of that project, along with Producers Roger Lay, Jr., and Eric Carnagey of Lay-Carnagey Entertainment. The 2019 Daytime Emmy Award winners will be announced on May 5.
For the project, MastersFX designed and created the film’s title aliens. Starting with a series of concept illustrations, Masters and his team developed the original images from Bruce Coville’s book. “We all loved Katherine Coville’s art – from the books – and we wanted to expand on those ideas, in their cinematic-form,” Masters says.
“Since I was one of the producers, and working with a tight budget, we were able to cut a million corners – quickly getting designs approved, our FX builds were started early on, and our alien cast members were hired fast. We even managed to sneak one of our longtime studio supervisors, Brad Proctor, inside a plant, to portray the role of ‘Phil the Plant!’ His part was later voiced by William Shatner,” Masters adds.
Other members of the film’s “Galactic Patrol” cast were: the graceful and powerful “Madam Pong,” portrayed by Tristan Risk (“American Mary,” “Rabid,” “The Editor”); Alex Zahara as “Tar Gibbons” (“Stargate,” “iZombie,” “The Man In the High Castle”), and Dan Payne (“Watchmen,” “The Flash,” “Star Trek: Beyond”), as “Grakker,” a blue-faced alien soldier who has a behavior module for nearly every personality.
“We got very lucky with our aliens cast – everyone was perfect and amazing,” Masters continues. “We were lucky to be able to invite them in early, as we had done several projects with each of them and knew they’d be perfect for these characters. Working with the rest of our MastersFX team, developing these characters was an amazing and fun process. We had to pinch ourselves – everyone that we wanted for this project was just as excited as we were.”
In addition to the puppets, prosthetics, and animatronics work MastersFX traditionally contributes to the films and TV projects for which it is involved, the team also designed and created the alien costumes, weapons, and a variety of props for “Aliens Ate My Homework.” “Each of these characters evolved in our makeup and dressing rooms, after a few costume fittings. Each performer would come by and we’d literally start building on them, embellishing their costumes with a variety of additional items. As each member of the ‘Galactic Patrol’ is from a different part of the universe, our team made sure each actor had his or her own look, style, color and feel.”
“Normally, so many of these character FX would have been nearly impossible given our tight budget. But since we were so personally invested in the project – and all such big fans of Bruce Coville’s books – we insisted that everyone on the team gave it the old ‘Get’r done’ attitude, and just have fun. For all of us, it was truly the love for the project that got this made – and the Emmy nomination is the topping on the cake!” Masters concludes.
Said Lay and Carnagey, “From the very start of this project, we set our sights on making sure that every aspect of ‘Aliens Ate My Homework’ would make young viewers believe in the wonder of the story so they would want to be a part of this adventure. Todd Masters and his team at MastersFX helped us achieve that by surrounding the cast with wildly imaginative practical creatures that could perform and interact with our cast without any limitations. As longtime fans of Todd’s work, we can say that working with him on this film was a dream come true.”
Lay-Carnagey Entertainment and Todd Masters are already collaborating on another film project – details of which will be announced soon.
About “Aliens Ate My Homework”:
Extraterrestrials invade Earth and a pair of middle schoolers hold the fate of the world in their hands in “Aliens Ate My Homework,” a delightfully comical intergalactic adventure from Universal 1440 and Lay-Carnagey Entertainment, directed by Sean McNamara, which debuted on Netflix during 2018. “Aliens Ate My Homework” is based on the first book in the wildly successful Rod Allbright and the Galactic Patrol series. Written by internationally renowned author Bruce Coville, the four-part saga has sold over 17 million books worldwide and has been translated into 16 languages.
When a tiny intergalactic starship crashes into the bedroom of 12-year-old Rod Allbright (Jayden Greig), it’s the start of the adventure of a lifetime for him and his cousin Elspeth (Lauren McNamara). Enlisted by the extraterrestrial Galactic Patrol, a group of out-of-this-world lawmen, Rod and Elspeth must race to save the world from Total Planetary Disaster. The film features the voice of “Star Trek’s” William Shatner as the intrepid intergalactic explorer known as Phil the Plant.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Toronto, Ontario, April 8, 2019 – Despite the early Spring chill - monsters, special effects, and superheroes are burning it up just outside Toronto. There, in Etobicoke - at the newest MastersFX Studio – the company’s award winning character FX team is celebrating its third anniversary, and the crew’s work creating fantastic new creatures for hit TV shows and popular movies is hotter than ever.
New projects from the MastersFX/Toronto team include their work on The Handmaid’s Tale – with season three of that acclaimed Hulu series set to premiere in June. MastersFX has been supplying the grisly makeup effects for the award-winning series since its debut. With The Handmaid’s Tale currently filming its third season, the MFX studio helps bring the series’ alarming world of “Gilead” to life; its work ranging from artificial babies (MFX Artist Josh Raymond creating one such baby in PHOTO ABOVE) and bodies, to pregnancies and surgical procedures. In addition to the on-set applications of these FX, Lead Makeup Effects Artist Zane Knisley has been spearheading the prosthetics design for each episode, meticulously working to have the effects look as true to real life as possible.
For four seasons of the acclaimed science fiction series The Expanse – which will soon premiere at its new streaming home on Amazon - MastersFX/Toronto has created many of the memorable prosthetics effects, and tattoo designs for the “Belters,” and the “Extreme Belters,” along with tattoos for the main cast of the show. A customized burn design was also created for the character of “Commander Klaes Ashford,” played by David Strathairn, and was applied by MFX Effects Artists Kyle Glencross and Supervisor Zane Knisely. The Toronto team helped to bring some of the grisly battle scenes to life by fabricating wounds of various healing stages, scars, and mutilations.
Additionally, MastersFX/Toronto (MFX/TO) has recently completed the make-up FX and character masks for the fresh new Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. Team member and veteran makeup effects artist Kyle Glencross sculpted and painted the “Hazel” and “Cha Cha” masks worn by Mary J. Blige and Cameron Britton for that new show. Glencross added his unique style to create these revered character masks. The MastersFX (MFX) team also produced the “Domino” masks worn by the series’ young cast of superheroes. Various character scars, wounds, and grisly prosthetics were designed for the show, all of which appealed to its creator Steve Blackman’s love of gore and practical effects.
MFX/TO Supervisor Zane Knisely - who has been creating innovative makeup effects for the entertainment industry for over 20 years - leads the artists at the MastersFX Toronto Studio. “Ever since we opened three years ago, it seems like we’ve consistently been on a growth spurt. We had to move into a new, larger space last year, in fact. Our new space is bustling, and bursting at the seams, with incredible new monsters and fake body parts,” he says.
“Zane is an amazing artist -- we’ve been working together even before creating the Toronto Studio,” adds MastersFX President and Founder Todd Masters. “Zane mentioned to me a few years ago that we need to build a space in Toronto, so we started talking and costing out the idea. Then, nearly at the same time, a producer on a series we were developing also told us we NEEDED to set up a shop there. Zane was exactly right!”
Masters explains that after originally locating what they thought would be enough space back in 2016, he and Knisely launched the Toronto Studio on April Fools day of that year, appropriately enough. “We started with something small, just to secure our presence in that amazing city,” Masters said, “And we’ve just kept growing. We’ve never looked back.”
Other recent projects enjoying the remarkable FX contributions of the MastersFX/Toronto Studio include the reboot of David Cronenberg’s horror classic Rabid, from the Soska sisters. Regarding the unpredictable indie film, set for a late 2019 release, Knisely said, “Todd and his Vancouver team typically work on the Soskas’ film projects, so when he called me and told me that we’d be involved with Rabid from Toronto, I thought he was kidding. He wasn’t kidding.”
“It was wonderful to reunite with Todd and MastersFX on our remake of Rabid, given it was our return to body horror,” the film’s Writers and Directors Jen & Sylvia Soska said. “This was our first time working with Todd’s Toronto Studio, and Zane and the other artists based there simply blew us away with their original, innovative, and totally unforgettable effects. We simply cannot wait to unleash Rabid later this year!”
Additional new projects for the busy MFX/TO Studio include the upcoming Netflix feature film In the Shadow of the Moon, and CBC’s The Coroner.
Another project which makes the MFX/TO team especially proud was their work on the horror film The Dark, which has just been nominated for a Fangoria “Chainsaw Award for Best Makeup.” Regarding the honor from that highly influential genre magazine, Knisely said, “The Fangoria Award Nomination was an awesome surprise! The Dark was one of our early projects here. Our team really went the extra mile for that film, in support of a great script we all really liked. We are thrilled that Fangoria fans appreciated it too – it’s a tremendous honor.”

Masters explains how every project his company undertakes is like putting together a new puzzle which needs to be solved. During the course of 30 years, MASTERSFX has consistently remained current, having evolved itself into three studios: Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles. The company continues to lead the charge in influencing cinematic approach to FX, and has even influenced other, much bigger FX studios, with their groundbreaking work along the way.
““Today, we are happy to see many of our practical FX methodologies becoming more prevalent - these can be seen in the onslaught of productions treating their audiences to incredible visual spectacles. Some of the latest examples include ‘Ghost in the Shell,’ the most recent ‘Star Trek’ films, and all over TV. Producers and directors who integrate practical FX into their projects have come to realize it is often an easier approach on their pipelines. I’ve even seen some of our unique techniques and methods used within the newest ‘Star Wars’ films,” Masters states.
A surprise TV sensation, FX's “Legion” has captivated audiences in perhaps one of the most successful superhero origin stories to date. “Legion” follows schizophrenic patient David Haller (Dan Stevens) as he begins to realize that his mental illness may in fact be the manifestation of incredible superhuman powers. As David comes to terms with what in his reality is real and not, he is haunted by the grotesque "Devil With The Yellow Eyes," who thwarts his attempts to get well.
Known for their unforgettable creatures, the MASTERSFX team designed and created the “Devil With The Yellow Eyes” character, working closely with series showrunner Noah Hawley. MFX showed Hawley several of their own concepts, based on some of his notes, and Hawley selected the one that is now on air. The MFX team had fun creating this unusual and visually bizarre character – one that has really connected with fans and critics alike who spent all season wondering, "Who is the Devil with the Yellow Eyes?" (PICTURED ABOVE WITH MASTERSFX MAKEUP ARTIST SARAH PICKERSGILL)
Masters also cites “The Belko Experiment” as a good example of a customized blending of CG and practical on-set FX. “In Belko, we shot true elements, photographing many graphic parts, and then combined them with the original practical FX—literally blending practical and digital,” he says. “This way, we achieved a believable look for our digital blood enhancements – they felt like they were really there.”
Masters adds that in many of today’s genre projects, the blending of CG and practical FX quite often delivers the desired look. “With so much CG in so many of today’s films, our clients come to us and say that they wish their FX-heavy scenes felt more organic, more ‘real.’ We tell them that the best way to achieve this is through a practical, on-set FX solution. Or a practical solution that can then be enhanced with digital - it is so hard for CG to convey a layer of fidelity, especially on a short television schedule. Shows like ‘The Magicians,’ ‘The Expanse’ and ‘Legion’ all require the ‘tricks’ and apparitions they present to really seem believable. CG and digital only solutions can often fail to make those illusions feel right."

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]FX studio Mastersfx has announced the opening of a 5,000 square foot facility in Toronto.
The company, which has also operated a Vancouver studio since 2000, specializes in providing character effects (such as FX for creatures, prosthetics, digital makeup, tattoos and props) for film and television. In addition, Masterfx supplies FX props to studios for rental. The new studio space is located in Etobicoke, ON and is currently staffed by 10 FX artists.
Company president Todd Masters told Playback Daily that one of the reasons the company chose to set up shop in Toronto was that some clients were beginning to insist Mastersfx had a studio in the city. For its TV projects in particular, Masters said the need to be based here in a permanent capacity, rather than simply as a pop-up effects shop, prompted the studio opening. Over the past five years in Toronto, Masterfx has worked on projects such as Netflix’s Hemlock Grove and more recently on NBC’s Heroes Reborn.
There were artistic reasons as well as business ones that prompted the opening of the new studio, added Masters.
“Toronto is a bit of a genre town. There are a lot of things that happen [in Toronto] in fantasy, science-fiction and horror, which is kind of our bread and butter,” said Masters of the company’s reasons for setting up in the city.
Established by Masters almost three decades ago, Mastersfx has previously worked on Mad Men, True Blood, Almost Human and Falling Skies, as well as creating the vampires on True Blood and the corpses on Six Feet Under. The company is also currently working on two Syfy shows – The Expanse, which shoots in Toronto, and iZombie, in Vancouver – as well as NBC’s The Night Shift and CBS series The Zoo.
The Toronto studio will see Masters partnering with FX makeup specialist Zane Knisely. The pair had collaborated on a number of projects before the conversation started about them opening a studio together.
Masterfx most recently picked up an Emmy Award for Outstanding Makeup for its work on Netflix original Monsterville.
